In 1881–82 planters discovered oil reserves near present-day Plano; within two years production had increased enough for Houston to import oil from abroad instead of using local sources. As a result of this new industry development and investment, businesses started flourishing in Plano: A&P grocery store (1892), Pemberton Paper Company (1909), J C Penney Department Store (1921), Coca Cola Bottling Works (1922). The discoveries led to an influx of workers: Enterprising businessmen bought up tracts of land for drilling rights; soon there were numerous wells dotting acres along North Avenue west between I-10 and Ray Road north of downtown Plano – sites which are still evident today with patches OF oil soil left over from those days when vast amounts were produced yearly! As more people arrived in town they needed housing; early developers built styles including bungalows (1911), Italianate villas (1920s) / Craftsman style homes/condos (1930s) which remain popular today as single family residences or multi-family dwellings also known asplexes etcetera……………. plans continued being drawn up but never came close to reality until post WW II boom times when many refugees who’d streamed into America following World War II brought their skills with them….many FFH locals got involved including husbandry jobs such as truck Driving….. Planners finally got back on track after seeing all these construction going on right outside their door…… When it comes to neighborhoods we can look back on any one block or even any specific building & say “well hello there” (& sometimes offer help if needed)…… planners quickly realized that different parts/neighborhoods needed different things like cultural enrichment etc…. so they began working with various organizations like Catholic Charities then later Federal government entities like USDA Forest Service before eventually coming up with concepts for streetscapes etc….. Finally physical planning efforts became institutionalized when City Council created Planning Commission which remains largely unchanged till date
Plano was founded in 1872 by a group of pioneers, led by Colonel John F. Worth and Captain Benjamin Latimer, who established the town on a tract of land that had been given to them by the Indian tribe known as the Kenedykes. The area now occupied by Plano was first settled by Native Americans in the late eighteenth century. In 1872, Worth and Latimer developed a plan for the town which they submitted to the Texas General Land Office. After hearings, it was decided that Plano would be built on an elevated site east of what is now Elm Street and West of Trinity Avenue. The first post office was established in 1873. By 1875, there were over 100 residents living in Plano. The city's population peaked at about 350 in 1890 but declined rapidly due to increased competition from Fort Worth and other towns within Texas' newly formed statewide system of government. By 1901, Plano had only 30 residents remaining and its total property value amounted to $2,500. In 1911, Fort Worth annexed Plano into its city limits; however, plans for a unified city continued to languish until 1916 when Mayor Harry Barrett successfully petitioned state leaders for annexation into the Greater Fort Worth Area (GFA). The resulting merger created one of North America's largest metropolitan areas with an estimated population of 2 million people at its peak in 2000. Plano has seen many expansions over its history: In 1922-1924, plans called for enlarging Richardson Park into what is today Midtown Park; however this proposal was later scrapped because it would have put too much strain on already stretched resources within City Hall – leading eventually to the currentMidtown Plaza development nearby which became reality thanks toCity Council approval back in 2006-2007! Furthermore since then there have been various new development proposals announced or pushed through City Hall including Steeles Landing (2009), Turtle Creek Crossing (2010),Downtown Eastside/South Side redevelopment (2011) and finally Midtown Plaza Phase II/III redevelopment (2012-2013).
