In the early 1800s, ammo was a scarce commodity in Plano. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1853 and quickly became a center for the shooting of buffalo, deer, and other animals. Ammunition manufacturers quickly moved to Plano from eastern Texas because of its natural resources and access to markets in Mexico and Europe. In 1865, an ammunition factory was built on Black Mesa Boulevard, now known as Elm Street. The factory produced military gunfire until it closed in 1979. Today, the building is home to the Plano Historical Museum. The first firearms in Plano were handguns made by Captain James Bowie & Sons here in 1851-1852. Rifle production began soon afterward with W H Smith Manufacturing Company manufacturing rifles starting around 1854-1858. In 1861-1862, Confederate forces invaded Texas and Sherman’s army destroyed many ammunition factories including that of Capt James Bowie & Sons on Elm Street just south of downtown Plano (today’s Elm Street Blvd.). After years of beingatonized by Union troops during the Civil War, most gun companies turned their attention to munitions production beginning with Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company starting operations at a new plant north of town called Armstrong Avenue on Valentine Road in 1865. By 1889 all but one of Armstrong Avenue’s buildings had been taken down due to fire suppression efforts initiated by city leaders after several rounds were fired from an unlicensed rifle game site located nearby on what is nowOld Glory Drive (now Sunshine Valley Drive). After World War I ammunition production shifted towards machine guns and artillery shells becoming more important due to advances in technology following World War I however some small arms manufacturer continued making rounds for pistols into the 1920s such as M1914 Armory (later Colt Industries) which manufactured pistols into the 1940s before moving their activities offshore to Indonesia where they operated until 1958 when they closed their doors permanently leaving behind an inventory of over 1 million firearms products! Today there are still traces left throughout Plano honoring those who have contributed to this unique community through Ammunition production dating back over 150 years!
