In 1932, when Plainside Avenue (now Interstate 35) was designation as the primary route between Austin and Round Rock, Plainview followed suit with a major road project that improved access to both cities. The addition of two shopping malls - One mall opened in 1984 and replaced an old Sears store; the other opened in 1998 - helped make Plainview one of the most popular retail destinations in central Texas. In 2007, local officials announced plans to build a new high school on land adjacent to present-day Main Street in plain view just east of Interstate 35W near Loop 610 (formerly I-35E). Because PlainVIEW would be within city limits only - no annexation into Round Rock or Austin awaited it - this development would not impact either city's growth patterns or transportation options but raised eyebrows among some longtime residents who worry about how such a small town could possibly compete with more populous areas on two sides of I-35W. A vote on whether to proceed with construction took place during 2017's Regular Session Of The Texas Legislature but failed to get support from either party leaders so plans are stalled indefinitely pending resolution from outside forces
