Plainview is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,565 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1877 by Brigham Young and his family as a mission station for the LDS Church. It became an incorporated town on February 14, 1907. Plainview is located in the Clear Fork Valley of Midland County and straddles the border of Hudspeth and Newton counties. The Clear Fork Valley has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European arrival. In 1795, French explorer Pierre-Jean de La Salle discovered what would become Plainview when he explored the area near present-day Midland City and hunted deer along the banks of the Clear Fork River. In 1837, James Bowie came through Hudspeth County on his way to Fort Worth from Wichita Falls and found a place called "PlainVIEW" (now part of Wichita Falls) about six miles west of where it now sits on government land west of US 271 (today's Elmendorf Road). He named it after Pierre-Jean de La Salle's discoveries in that area--PLAINVIEW being one French word meaning "plain". In 1877, Brigham Young and his family founded a missionstation in Plainview from which they preached to converts throughout Midland County. Plainview is a small town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and was once one of the most important cotton plantations in Texas. The town was founded in 1847 by Captain James Robertson and his wife, who named it after their old home, Plainview Farmstead. He built a large house on what is now Main Street while also erecting several other dwellings around it. Hardin's village quickly grew into one of the most important commercial centers in Fort Worth during the 1870s and 1880s. In 1888 he donated all of his land east of Main Street (including parts of what is now Arlington Heights) to Fort Worth public school district for use as a high school campus; this donation remains today as Arlington Heights Park). During Prohibition Era alcohol production took place at Hardin's Villa on Massachusetts Avenue near Springtown Road; however, no alcohol ever reached hand-held consumption within PlainVIEW Township limits.
The Plainview community was founded in 1881 when a group of farmers bought the land that now makes up the town. The first post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1884. The town grew rapidly, and by 1907 it had a population of over 1,200 people. In 1912, the Plainview Volunteer fire department was organized, and in 1927 the town became a city.
