Plainview, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that is known for its cotton fields and cattle ranching. The name Plainview came from the fact that there was no other place to put their plain-colored cotton until they developed some irrigation systems and increased crop production. The population of PlainVIEW peaked at 1,814 in 1910 but has been declining ever since, reaching a low of 627 in 2000. However, the population rebound seen recently in PlainVIEW is due to both immigration and new development opportunities within the town itself as well as growth outside of it facilitated by Interstate 10 which runs through it. PlainVIEW is located about ten miles northeast of San Antonio on FM 925 and straddles what was once a salt marsh where water used to flow into streams that eventually emptied into bayous near downtown San Antonio. Today, much of this land has become residential areas such as Union Hills and Eisenhower Drive within walking or biking distance of each other while portions adjacent to FM 925 remain agricultural with dozens of farmsteads scattered around. In 1836 Chinese immigrants started farming hereabouts along with African Americans who had also come overland from Alabama during the early 1800s seeking work on various plantations across South Texas under Spanish rule. By 1860 most Native American people living here were either dead or gone after years of warfare between Indian tribes and Mexican forces which followed annexation by Mexico following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Cotton cultivation began among settlers hereabouts in 1865 when John Fenton bought 4 acres near present-day River Walk Boulevard for $10 per acre (about $2 per sq ft). In 1870 he raised 300 bales/day on his property before selling it to Worth Hance who became one OF THE FIRST CATTLE RANCHERS IN TEXAS! “Worth Hance set up his first rancho [ranch] five miles east (north) of our village on today’s Elmendorf Road opposite Spring Branch Creek`—the spot now occupied by Mrs———-’s home—and started raising Hereford cows, milking them every morning before dinner….We all enjoyed good milk until we left Independence for these dry hills three years ago!” -Lonnie Green
