Plainview is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of Arlington. The name Plainview comes from two early settlers, John and Rachel Plain who were both farmers. They named their farm "PlainVIEW" because it overlooked a meadow that they considered to be plain as country roads leading to it ran east-west. The community began as a farming village with only four dozen residents in 1955 when U.S. Route 75 passed through the area and connected Arlington to Fort Worth to the north and Lubbock to the south. By 1962, when U.S.-Canada Highway 95 entered Plainview via FM 2492 (now US 80), more than seventy homes had been built there since then including thirty-six school children and six adults who worked for AT&T Telephone Company's Research Laboratory near campus before it became part of Comcast NBCUniversal in 1997. In 2000, Comcast merged with Time Warner Cable Inc., creating one major telecommunications company which also included Arlington's cable systems providers Charter Communications Inc., Cox Media Group (CNN/HLN), Bright House Networks Inc., Level 3 Communications LLC., MetroPCS Corporation (PCS) and Verizon Business Information Services LLC.; among other companies; making Plainview one of five localities within Comcast's corporate limits not subject to its previous restrictive ownership rules that applied only to its core properties in Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, New York City and Washington D.(1) In 2002-2004plainview was ranked #2 out of nine countries studied by Forbes magazine for "the best places for entrepreneurial businesses." According to Forbes’ “10 Best Cities For Entrepreneurship” Ranking published in January 2006,[2] "of those surveyed...plainview ranks number 2nd behind San Francisco [...] [and] ahead of Dallas-Fort Worth [...] [which] has been No. 1 since 1998." Plainview is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1881 by James A. Barnes and John L. Wright as a result of the opening of the Santa Fe Railway's line from Austin to Medina County. In 1907, Plainview became an independent municipality with its own government and school system. The post office was first established in Plainview on November 8, 1907. In 1916, Plainview Elementary School opened its doors to students grades kindergarten through eighth grade. On May 5th of that year, the school district merged with nearby Whitneyville Independent School District to form the present-day Medina County School District #1 (MCSD #1). In 1922, PlainVIEW High School began serving students through ninth grade; however, it did not open until 1928due to financial reasons related to World War I and II shortages of facilities in Medina County On October 10th 1987 Hurricane Rita struck landfall just south of PlainVIEW near Nacogdoches leaving extensive damage along both banks of Clear Fork creek as well as many homes destroyed or damaged beyond repair Marshall Agee played football for Plainview High School from 1959-1962 and 1963-1965 Bob Lillyman coached at RMU for over 20 years before becoming head coach at USF after coaching for 3 seasons at RMU
In Plainview, Texas, the first white European settlers arrived in 1836. The town was named after a small creek that ran through the area. The town was founded by James Hogg and his brother-in-law John Fenton in 1836. Plainview was originally a small cattle ranch and settlement grew slowly until it developed into a small town with about 100 residents in 1850. In 1865, Plainview became an independent municipality when it seceded from Kaufman County. The population of Plainview peaked at over 1,500 residents in 1880 but gradually declined until it reached its current size of around 150 residents in 1950.
