Plainview is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. Plainview's ZIP code is 78660. The community started as a log cabin on the banks of the Trinity River in 1876. The first post office was founded in 1881 and named for local pioneer John Plainview. The name changed to Plainview in 1903 when the community became part of Williamson County. In 1915, Plainview began growing cotton plantations with help from Deutsche Bank and other financiers. In 1922, PlainVIEW School District #1 was organized and soon after annexed by the new Williamson County school district #2 which had been formed from parts of three previous school districts: Clear Creek Independent School District #1 (1892-98), Presley Independent School District #2 (1902-05), and Newbern Independent School District #3 (1907-10). The plain view store built in 1907 remains standing today and is used as a museum by the PlainVIEW Historical Society. In 1961, plans were submitted to build a shopping center on land that now fronts FM 620 but no action was taken until 1988 when developer Wally Hirsch offered to donate 20 acres of land for the project if it would be included in an expanded elementary school plan being developed for nearby Springdale Elementary School. After much negotiation, agreement was reached and construction began on what is now known as Walmart Supercenter which opened its doors in 1992.

Plainview is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 as part of the Mobeetan settlement area by entrepreneurs and cattlemen who bought land in what is now Midland County. The name "plain" comes from an early settler's suggestion that it be named after his relative Plainfield, Connecticut. The townsite was first surveyed on November 6, 1881 by Wm. P. Hinton and Jno. Bigham, both residents of Austin.[2] Hinton had been appointed surveyor for the new county of Midland and decided to survey a community east of Austin because he thought it would make more sense to have a center where people could trade goods with each other than scattered around the countryside.[3] On February 2, 1882, James Robertson deposited $2 per acre (0.86 pounds) in an account at the First National Bank of Plainview for use when township land became available for purchase within its boundaries;[4] this act created the nucleus of what would become Plainview Village.[5][6] In 1886–87,[7] local farmers started raising cotton on 100 acres (40 hectares) near present-day Interstate 10 and U.S.-Route 281 south of the Main Street Cemetery;[8][9][10] this began what would become one of Plainview's most important economic engines during its early years.[11][12][13]:1 In 1893–94,[14]:1 Frank Wintle developed a small tract between I-10 and US 281 known as Brownwood Prairie;[15]:1 this property later became home to Plains View Mall which opened in 1984.] In 1907,[16]:1 John Dickson donated 160 acres (60 hectares) northeast of town to help build Rice University's Texas Agricultural Experiment Station;[17]:1 Rice eventually built two large campuses – one on campus now known as Douglas Stadium and another across Elmendorf Rd., east of town off FM1960 – giving rise to what is today Rice University's Lone Star Campus (although some buildings located closer to downtown still bear university markings). A post office was established at PlainVIEW on October 11, 1889,[18]:2 but no mail ever reached plainVIEW until 1899 when George Fenton mailed letters from Austin using stagecoaches Routt Land & Mail Company service! At first only men could write letters but soon everyone got their own mailbox with stamps which they used also for sending parcels by mail! On December 14th 1910 plainVIEW celebrated its centennial year with a big parade through town featuring floats made outof hay bales!
The Plainview community was located in unincorporated Webb County, Texas, on the east side of the Arkansas River. It was founded by John and Sarah Young in 1851 as a station on the transcontinental Railroad. The Young family moved to Plainview in 1872 and continued to live there until their death in 1925.
