Plainview is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Gregg County and second most populous city in the county after Amarillo. The namesake of Plainview is John plain who settled there in 1836. A post office was established at Plainview on November 17, 1840, by J. H. Allbright with the name "Hargrave". The first recorded settler to bear the name of Plainview was George Wetherbee who arrived about 1840 from Virginia. Plainview became a city on February 27, 1907 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Arlington and Haskell City. On July 24, 1936, it merged with Amarillo to form a new metropolitan area that included all of Gregg County except Forney and Pecos City which remained separate municipalities until they became part of Amarillo on January 1, 1957. The original downtown business district still exists today within walking distance of several cultural attractions including Plains Indian Museum & Cultural Center (the only museum west of Wichita), Great Plains Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo), Globe-Kneeland Mills (a former cotton gin/mills complex built around 1875) and Stroud–Bennett Glass Co., Incorporated (founded in 1916).
