Other prominent buildings include the Masonic Lodge (built 1893), Samuel Hildebrandt's general store (opened 1910), the Odd Fellows Hall (opened 1912), and John Fenton's farmstead (founded 1879). A small number of residences were built during this time but most of them have been replaced by more recent structures or have been destroyed by fire or other natural disasters. In 1969, Plainview experienced one of the largest agricultural accidents in Texas when a combine tractor overturned while on a minor road east of town; all 10 passengers were killed.

The first school in PlainVIEW was established in 1893 when Mrs. Anna Nelson donated land for a schoolroom and teacher's house. It served as an elementary school until 1916 when it became an high school. From 1916-1935, Plains View Elementary School served as the only public education facility for residents of PlainVIEW until Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View)opened its doors in 1935 with Schools 1-10th grades. ranchers began to settle around Plainview beginning with Isaac McCoy and others from Missouri who came overland during cattle drives during the 1880s to purchase grazing land for their herds of Hereford and Holstein cows. By 1905 there were more than 10 ranches located around plainview including those run by Jethro Brandtqvist (1862-1937), George Prentice (1865-1945), Harry Laughlin (1869-1959), Michael Ewing (1900-1976), Wm Henson (1902-1982). In 1933, portions of Plains View east of IH 35 were annexed into Dallas County while much of west side including present dayplainVIEW remained within Prairie View A&M University limits until 1982 whenDallas County annexed much of that area as well making Plains VIEW both a community within Prairie View A&M University boundaries AND an incorporated city/town within Dallas County boundaries!
On November 15, 1836, violence erupted in Plainview when a group of farmers began to resist a new land grant from the Mexican government. The farmers were soon joined by local militia and settlers, who fought back with gunfire and knives. A bloody battle ensued that left five people dead and thirty-six injured. The event is considered one of the largest domestic homicide campaigns in Texas history. The majority of the blame for the massacre falls on the leadership of community leader John Hogg, who ordered his men to open fire on unarmed peasants. However, several individuals including Hogg have since been charged with manslaughter or murder in connection with the event.
