When Plainview, Texas was founded in 1879, it was a small town with only six residents. The town's first landowner, James Baldridge, donated two acres of land to the community for the purpose of constructing a school and burying his dead. When the town's population grew to seven in 1881, Baldridge donated another acre for a post office and public square. The townsite changed hands multiple times before it was purchased by J. W. (Bill) Kapp in 1895. Kapp designated the site of Plainview's first Presbyterian church as its civic center and began construction on that building in 1897. The cornerstone was laid on October 9th that year and completed just four years later on November 20th. Kapp served as Plainview's mayor from 1907 to 1912 and 1914 to 1916; he also served as township treasurer from 1911 to 1913 and 1915 to 1917. In 1925, Kapp sold his share of the town to Edwin Weisbrod who continued to operate it until 1936 when he sold it again to Harry Burchfield who operated it until 1951 when it passed into private ownership once again. In 1957, Texaco bought Plainview Township from Burchfield for $8,500 which led to an increase in activity at the local petroleum refinery which had been built there since 1924 by Standard Oil Company of California (SOC). The company moved its operations out oftown during World War II but returned after hostilities ended; during their time away, they constructed several large buildings including an oil refinery chapel which still stands today within plain view of Richardson Dam across the Trinity River near Carthage Road

In 1916, he donated his land to the University of Texas at Austin for use as a research station. The university has continued to use the property for its research ever since.

In 1951, Plainview adopted its current name, after Plains View Elementary School (now Plainview Middle School) was built on Main Street and named for local pioneer rancher John Hodgeplain View (1836-1910). The early days of Plainview were difficult because it was located near what was then one of the most important cotton markets in Texas. The town's fortunes changed when oil drilling began to occur in Cameron County and people started to come to live there for work. At first they were mostly farmers who used their land for fertilizer and hay production but soon enough people from other parts of Texas started living here too - some brought their families with them, while others came alone or with groups of friends. By 1957 plainview had become one of the largest oil towns in Texas due to all the drilling going on around it! It wasn't until 1978 that First National Bank moved into its present location on Main Street - now known as US Highway 281 - which made downtown PlainVIEW finally accessible to all! And so begining...the modern era for PlainVIEW! Prior to 1978 there were only a few businesses that directly served downtown PlainVIEW; however, over time these have grown larger and more centralized within downtown: Several restaurants/cafes dot downtown today thanks to annexation by neighboring municipalities during this time period: Coca Cola Refreshment Center (opened 1984), D&D Pizza Place (opened 1990), TGIF Warehouse & Grill (opened 1998), Subway sandwich shop (opened 2002), JB pizzeria ($) ($) ($) ($) ($$$$,$$$$$). Consequently many residents feel isolated from day-to-day activities without these types of amenities closer at hand

The town grew quickly due to its location midway between Dallas and Houston on the Red River of Texas. With a population of around 350 people by 1915, PlainVIEW became an important railroad junction with connections to both Dallas and Houston. It also served as a market for grains and other agricultural products grown in the area. PlainVIEW experienced some significant development during World War II when it became home to the United States Navy's shipyard at Sam Rayburn Boulevard and Interstate 45 (Sam Rayburn Freeway). The shipyard produced large numbers of warships for the war effort including USS Texas (BB-35), USS Oklahoma (BB-36), USS Arkansas (BB-39), USS California (CA-6) and USS Pleasant Hill (AGS-5). In 1945, the shipyard closed after years of operation due to economic difficulties. Today, PlainVIEW is a small community located about 25 miles northwest of downtown Dallas along I-45 near Clear Lake County Airport

In 1907, the town became an agricultural center and began to grow as a railroad town. The population of Plainview increased by more than 100 percent between 1910 and 1920. The community experienced its peak during World War II when it had a population of over 1,500 people. After the war, Plainview declined as a result of economic decline and subdivisionization. However, it has continued to grow since then and now has a population of around 2,000 people.
