Plainview is a town in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Plainview is located on the east side of Travis County, about 26 miles (41 km) northwest of Austin and 18 miles (29 km) northeast of Dallas. It was founded in 1872 by James Ladd and his brother-in-law John Pemberton. The town was named for an open space near to its original site that had been called "Plainview Park." A post office was established at Plainview in 1875, and it served as the county seat from 1886 to 1911. The first store in Plainview opened in 1880. The first school in PlainVIEW was built in 1889 and served elementary students until 1908 when it became a high school. In 1923 the school board authorized construction of a new building which would serve as the current high school campus. In 1935 the name change to PlainVIEW High School after President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered a speech there calling for more American schools with plain campuses that would be accessible to all races than those focused on whites only or those with carved out identities for different groups such as girls or blacks. In 1957 NASA placed a man on the moon using two rockets launched from Earth: one Launch Vehicle (L1), which lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on January 16th 1957; while another took place overflying launch complex 39A at Vandenberg AFB California on July 20th 1958 - both were successful -- this event marked the beginning of human exploration beyond Earth's orbit. On November 5th 1966 during Lyndon Johnson's last term as president Ulysses S. On July 24, 1879, the Plainview train depot was built on what is now the corner of High and Elm Streets in Plainview. The depot served as a stop for local trains transporting goods from Plainview to Houston and other towns in Texas. The depot was condemned by the town council on December 12, 1881, after it became apparent that not enough money had been put into repairs needed due to its decrepit condition. The Depot was sold to a man named William Whitehead on January 1, 1882. Whitehead began repairing and improving the Depot until he died in 1886. In 1889, a new depot was built on State Highway 281 north of the old one. In 1907, an addition was added to the rear of the old Depot which included a new store and office building. The original buildings were replaced with this addition during World War II when war production increased in Plainview.
