A fire destroyed much of downtownSan Antonio on December 6, 1901 which led to the creation of a new city limits by annexing parts of two other towns - Clearwater and Alamo Heights - as well as parts of La Mesa and surrounding rural areas. The original settlers were German-Americans who came to the area in search of land that would offer good grazing opportunities for their horses and cattle. By 1836 there were around 20 families living in what is now Plainview; all but four had come from Germany or Austria according to one source. Most early pioneers were Lutheran but some also settled Methodist and Presbyterian churches as well as such Odd Fellows lodges as they became available near populated areas east of San Antonio de Bexar River. In 1907 (just prior to annexation into San Antonio), PlainVIEW City Limits had a population totaling 5,546 people including 3 aliens: Japanese Americans serving time for naturalization; two Mexican nationals working in agriculture for American farmers; plus 1 black man employed by American Telephone Company (AT&T). As part of annexation proceedings by the city it was noted that "the entire business district within [city limits] must be taken up with housing development." Housing developments began quickly throughout annexed boundaries but until 1923 most residents lived near commercial districts where services were available such as grocery stores, pharmacies and post office boxes open 24/7 like those found today within many cities across America due to advances in technology! In 1927 an ordinance was passed establishing public schools within city limits providing instruction through grades school age up through college preparatory classes leading eventually to university level education provided by community colleges after World War II when Texas statehood became official! Today's students attend local universities located just outside plainview proper or nearby sixth growth cities like Houston or Dallas while still maintaining strong ties with their hometown!
