Pharr, Texas is a small town located in Baylor County, Texas. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Pharr opened on November 3, 1876. The name of the town originates from "Farrar" which was a settlement near present-day Wichita Falls. The name was changed to Pharr on October 25, 1911 when Pecan Creek ran through the town and changed its name again to that on May 12, 1912 after Pharr's baptism by Rev. J.A. Fenton in Wichita Falls (now Wichita). On December 8, 1920, Pharr became a city and has since grown rapidly with annexations from other towns in Baylor County including Haskell and Forbesville during the early 21st century. Today's downtown area is home to several businesses such as banks (JPMorgan Chase and First National), restaurants (Zinc Road Café & Grill and Ruby Tuesday), theaters (The Guthrie Theatre and Live Oak Playhouse), a library with more than 10,000 books/movies/tv shows checked out per month (the University of Incarnate Word Library), numerous retailers including Home Depot (), Lowe's (), Sears (), Kroger () and T-Mobile (). Pharr, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Pharr was founded by John Witherspoon in 1867 as a post office and wagon stop on the Padre Trail between Austin and San Antonio. The name "Pharr" comes from an early Spanish name for a place called Paso del Rio Grande (Rio Grande Pass). In 1881, Pharr became a county seat when Hudspeth County was created from parts of Travis and Williamson counties. In 1907, it became a city when its land east of US 281 was annexed by Austin. In 1911, it lost its status as a city when it joined the newly created Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The downtown core of Pharr was designated as an official heritage district in 1987 under then Mayor Dick Yarborough's administration. A number of historical buildings were also added to that district during that time including: First Baptist Church (1867), Texas State Capitol Annex (1907), Richardson Hotel (1920s), and Travis County Courthouse Annex (1921). Today, most of the original buildings remain standing in downtown Pharr despite some damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Some have been replaced with new structures but many are still standing or have been renovated or updated since their original construction decades ago. This includes several churches which continue to be used for services today even though they may look different than when they first opened their doors - one example being First Baptist Church which has seen multiple renovations over the years including addition of an attached garage for parking purposes!
The town of Pharr, Texas was founded in 1836 by the brothers Charles and David Pharr. The town grew quickly due to its position on the banks of the Colorado River, which made it a valuable trade center. In 1840, Pharr became part of New Mexico Territory. In 1912, Pharr was reorganized as a city.
