Pharr was founded in 1874 by James Fenton, a white man from Tennessee. The town rapidly grew due to its location at the crossroads of three important routes - the Santa Fe Trail, the Mexican–American War and the Austin and San Antonio Railway. In 1907, Pharr became a census-designated place (CDP) and remained so until 2000. The town was originally built on land that now includes part of Pharr High School. The first residents of Pharr were farmers who planted corn, wheat and other crops. By 1850, however, most of the population had moved away because of gold discoveries in California. After being vacant for many years, parts ofpharr were developed as housing subdivisions during the late 1990s and early 2000s by developers associated with Houston's Second City development zone. During World War II, military commanders used Pharr as an airfield for refueling fighter planes stationed in Corpus Christi Bayou. A United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) weather station located here helped prevent large conjunctions of thunderstorms that could have caused extensive damage or loss of life on both sides during the war effort. The post office opened in 1904 and closed in 1951; it reopened under new management in 1957 before finally closing again in 1991 after more than fifty years service. In 1974, Texas State Senator Don Worth proposed legislation creating CDPs within Travis County to help address concerns about sprawl around Greater Austin metropolitan area growth potential; this proposal failed to receive any votes from the Senate but saw successful implementation through creation ofAREA Commissions within Travis County which later created CDPs within their jurisdictions). pharr is named after James Fenton who founded it
Pharr was founded in 1827 by the brothers John and David Pharr. The Pharrs were pioneers in the oil business, and their ranching and cattle farming operations produced large amounts of oil for local consumption. In 1853, the Pharrs joined forces with James Hildebrandt to form the Houston-based Refining House Company, which became one of the largest refiners in Texas. The company remained a leading player in refining oil until 1978 when it merged with ConocoPhillips.
