The shop was open until around 1912 when it burned down. In 1907, John Capps opened a store on Elm Street that became known as "The Glass Bazaar." His business provided materials for making optics including glass beads and lens caps. He continued to sell his products until he died in 1959. By 1911, there were two stores operating in Pharr - J H Smith's Store on Main Street and John Capps' store on Elm Street. By 1960, there were six stores in town with a total market value of $2 million! By the end of the 1960s, local businesses had fallen victim to economic recession and mall competition; however, some local businesses such as The Glass Bazaar continued to operate into the 1970s

Starting with just 10 residents in 1960, Pharr grew rapidly through annexation of several smaller villages until it reached its current size of 1,907 residents in 2000

In 1951, the town name changed to honor banker Jerald Ephraim Hargrave who had contributed $5,000 to help finance the construction of the first school in Hudspeth County. The original school building still stands today as part of the Hudspeth County Historical Museum which is located in downtown Pharr.
Pharr was founded by Austin and Mexico City entrepreneurs in 1839. It became a major cotton-based center during the 1840s, and Case County, adjoining Pharr, was named for its rich soil. The town’s growth continued through the 1850s as a result of its position on the Rio Grande. By 1865, Pharr had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over 100 miles of railroad linking it to neighboring counties. However, the town’s prosperity flagged after railroads were built to bypass it and other nearby towns; moreover, many residents left for better opportunities in Texas during the Civil War. In 1865, Pharr was abandoned as a result of Union General John J. Pershing’s destruction of all bridges across the Rio Grande near that year’s Battle of Bexar Bridge.
