Pharr is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by John M. Pharr in 1869 and named for him. He had come from Illinois to find his fortune in the cattle business. The first store opened in 1870 and the first post office was established in 1871. In 1881, Pharr built a large cotton gin and integrated it into hisown business. By 1890, he had 9 stores in operation and over $1 million invested; he also owned a small railroad that transported goods to Pharr from around Texas and Mexico City. Pharr's success as a businessman led him to make other donations to local charities and contribute money for infrastructure projects such as a new courthouse and school district addition near his home. He also served on several committees responsible for developing various aspects of civic life including setting up regulations governing mercantile activity within the town limits (the so-called "pharr law"). In 1913, he donated land adjacent to his home on which Broadway Presbyterian Church now stands; this provided the nucleus for what would become downtown Pharr with its many businesses and residences dating back to that time period. In 1925, John M.'s grandson James P."J"M Pharr became president of Texaco while still living at home; during his years with Texaco, Mr.Pharr oversaw construction of more than twenty oil refineries throughout Texas as well as major expansions at Texaco plants located outside Houston TX John M.'s wife Emma died suddenly after giving birth to their only child James J."J"M when they were both just forty-five years old – less than two years after they married – leaving behind an unfinished business: their children wanted their mother's ashes dispersed at her childhood home on Longview Plantation where she spent summers with her family before she died young in 1928 . Mrs."E"M arranged for them to be moved from Longview Plantation into an east side house on FM 1475 just north of downtown when her death certificate was published ; following her death James J."J"M continued sponsorship of services there until 2003 when all activities were discontinued due to health concerns caused by asbestos exposure

By the early 1870s, Pharr had a population of over 1,500 people. By the turn of the century, Pharr had become a railroad center with several lines running through the area. In 1912, Pharr was incorporated as a city and quickly developed into an important agricultural center. In 1916, World War I interrupted commercial growth in Pharr and its surrounding areas; however, local production continued to contribute to Texas' overall food supply. After World War II ended, agricultural production resumed in earnest in Pharr; today it is one of the largest cotton farming communities in Texas. In 2002, Pharr became home to San Antonio's only municipally-owned hospital.

Pharr was founded in 1839 by the father of Texas hero and governor of Texas, Sam Houston. The town grew rapidly as a result of its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes and its strategic position on the Brazos River. In 1855, Pharr became the capital of Texas after San Antonio was moved from Austin to become the state's capital.
