The history of Pharr begins with its founding in 1867 by James M. Fenton and his wife Lucy. At the time, this was one of only a handful of settlements within what would become Texas. The name of the settlement came from nearby Lamar Creek which spanned much of present day Pharr TX as well as other towns such as Lubbock and Templeton. Fenton quickly became successful in his business venture both agriculturally and mercifully adding a schoolhouse to his holdings for use by local children before leaving for good in 1870 following his marriage to Lucy Pringle near Lavaca TX (now part of Houston). This prosperity continued until 1876 when an intense drought left many farmers struggling statewide; specifically across central Texas where Pharr lay at that time. A new era began for Pharr when James Meeks arrived in late 1877 under auspices of Agricultural Experiment Station #1 (later renamed USDA) seeking to improve yields on cotton plantations throughout central Texas through scientific study and experimentation; something he had learned during his previous work managing ranches near Dallas/Fort Worth TX while employed by East Texas Cotton Exchange Company (ETX). With Meeks’ arrival, local businessmen followed suit chartering similar organizations soon after – some still operating out of barns or converted ramshackleadobe structures long into the 21st century – achieving commercial stability not seen since pre-drought days evenording services like agriculture, banking, transportation etc.. In short Morningside phase II: A Period Of Expansion! Although it may have been short lived due largely to economic conditions related primarily to world war I & II; nonetheless these early period successes served notice that things were aboutto change materially rapidly for all involved especially given post-war baby boomers swelling ranks among agricultural workers nationally who increasingly demanded more access to education & better working conditions than ever before…. [emphasis added] In 1919 James Fenton donated land east of Main Street off US Highway 287 between Haskell Rd./US 287 Business Loop (now FM 424) & FM 529 just east of Interstate 20 taking up what became known as “the Fenton tract” eventually comprising over 9 square miles today covering parts of four municipalities: Pearsallville/Lubbock; North Richland Hills/Houston; South Richland Hills/Pharr along with annexed portions Harris County including downtown Houston proper / Spring Branch southeastward extending into Robertson County including unincorporated areas now contained within Cedar Park limits northward]. Today this core area constitutes much more than simply tiny rural townhome developments dating back less than 100 years! To wit: Southwest corner parcel #2:: 8 acres :: $160 per acre :: 1915 incurred costs associated with reclamation project ($4,500 + Costs associated with platting lot), planting trees & flowers…phosphorous lime mortar 16 bushels per barrel……………..[a detailed description can be found here] While there are various interpretations surrounding why Jimmie Freshwater donated this large tract encompassing most or all present day Pharr - some suggest he simply wanted peaceable boundaries set around property so future generations could enjoy it unimpeded (& adjacent Sprague County); others believe he saw potential grazing opportunities available on land lying athwart IH 20 corridor providing feedstock for cattle ranchers centuries past whose operations helped contribute financially (& culturally) to their communities…. although no definitive proof exists one can assume without evidence prevailed influential people at that time knew full well 3 families enjoying contiguous tracts west fronting on major highways made significant contributions annually (~$10k+) directly or indirectly resulting in establishment & growthof today’s thriving community
The city of Pharr, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Mexican Republic's General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The city was named for Joséphine duches (1795-1864), wife of French Foreign Minister Nicholas-Jacques LaFontaine. During the American Civil War, Pharr served as a Confederate stronghold. In 1865, following the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Pharr became an American town.
