Pharr is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Ft. Worth metropolitan area. The settlement of Pharr started as a trading post on the Trinity River in 1836 by John Cavanaugh and his family. The name was chosen because of the pear trees found near Pharr Creek. In 1839, Cochran and James McDonald established a post northeast of present-day Pharr with goods from Missouri to trade with Native Americans along the Trinity River. In 1841, J H Baylor founded Baylor College in Wichita Falls, Texas south of Pharr on what is now Haskell Avenue. After Baylor's death in 1845, trustees selected Wm S McAllister to succeed him as president of Baylor College and he began construction on what would become known as "McAllister Hall". On November 15,1846, Methodist Episcopal Bishop John Sharp consecrated Houstonian Methodism's first church at Pharr when over 400 people attended services led by Rev Elisha Stevens (1801-1886). The town quickly became known for its slavery industry due to its location near Fort Worth on the main route between New Orleans and Houston through central Texas. In 1865-66 Confederate Major General Braxton Bragg fought his last battle outside Dallas before his surrender at Appomattox Court House four months later; during this time most residents left for fear of retribution from Union forces occupying their homes. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the American Civil War, African Americans were allowed to vote but were not permitted to hold political office until after passage of laws called Jim Crow laws in 1935. Republican Party candidates won all statewide offices except for attorney general; however Democrat George Norris was elected governor with 50% of the popular vote (the first black gubernatorial candidate in Texas). Norris moved from Austin to Pharr upon taking office and quickly initiated plans for infrastructure development including a new phosphate mine which would have employed thousands of Texans while providing tax revenue needed to partially fund education programs for African Americans; however this project languished due to lack of financial support from both Republicans and Democrats within state government until it finally closed operations in 1961 due to environmental concerns about nearby land acquisition that also impacted other industries catering to white settlers living adjacent thereto such as oil refineries and cotton plantations dating back centuries prior: these days only an archaeological site remains located off IH 35 just east of Interstate 30 exit 8A) Accordingtothe2010Census.,1,814People livedinPharrtownshipaccordingtothe 2000 U .S . But despite these challenges, the town continued to grow and prosper because its citizens were determined to make their mark on Texas history. Their hard work paid off: by 1915, Pharr had become one of the most important cities in Texas thanks to its booming economy and its importance as a commercial center for the surrounding rural areas. Today, Pharr is still an important community with strong cultural ties to its past. Its residents continue to pursue their economic opportunities while also preserving their traditions and values. This has made Pharr an especially vibrant community that thriving today thanks to its rich local history – something that will continue to make it an attractive place for both resident and visitor alike!
