Pharr, Texas is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first Americans to arrive in what is now Pharr were French Canadians who founded a post office there in 1836. A rancho was granted to Manuel Arguelles by Governor John Fayette on November 3, 1839. Alonso de Torres built a Mission San Francisco de las Flores near present-day Pharr in 1846 and named it after himself; he also donated land for the mission and construction began in 1848. The oil refinery that stands today on Main Street was built by Standard Oil of Texas in 1901 as one of their largest plants outside of Philadelphia (it had been started by Texaco two years earlier). In 1907, Pharr became the home of Dallas' only municipal court system when it separated from Denton County and incorporated as its own municipality under the name "Pharr". In 1911 Pharr's incorporation made it one of just six American cities to be included without any corresponding county boundaries; all others were annexed intoDallas subsequent year. In 1916 the city limits were increased from 2 square miles to 4 square miles due to annexation of neighboring towns including Garland and Richardson which had long been considered separate municipalities because they contained large numbers of German immigrants living within their borders. Pharr is a town in Coahuila and Texas, located in the far southwestern part of the state. It was founded by José de Rubí y Montero in 1834 as part of the Rancho San Antonio de las Animas. The name Pharr comes from a place called "Parr" meaning "village." In 1892, Pharr became a city after incorporation by local authorities. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Pharr was José de Rubí y Montero, who arrived on November 15, 1834. He and his family were seeking new land for their rancho San Antonio de las Animas and were told that there was already settlement at the site where present-day Pharr stands. They named their new village PARR because it resembled their home village of SAN ANTONIO DE LAS AMERICANAS (present-day Acapulco). On December 3, 1835, Juan Nunez married Rubí's daughter María Isabela; this marriage marked the beginning of Mexican colonization of what is now Coahuila and Texas. In 1840, two more settlers - Enrique Garcia and Vicente Guerrero - moved into present day Pharr from Zacatecas County in Mexico City with hopes of opening up grazing lands around what would become Houston County. After some initial successils they sold most or all their holdings within three years due to lack of water supplies and other problems with pioneers moving westward across open plains across the US border into Kansas Territory. In 1846–47 Manuel Avilés established himself as an Indian trader at PARR before moving on to Carlsbad Caverns east of Albuquerque NM in 1850 when gold began to be mined thereabouts About 1830 Jose Jesus Ortiz set out from Acapulco PR following reports that land south along Rio Grande had been claimed by Anglo Americans under contract from Mexican President Agustín de Santa Anna.- Ortiz reached PHARR on October 2nd 1830 after walking for weeks through sections nearcurrent San Marcos TX & Presidio Verde AZ.– reknowned for building “Albuquerque” about 8 miles SW modern PHARR on bank OF Rio Grande.– he started construction but died soon after completing it; his son Francisco Ortega continued work amassing considerable fortune Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés had discovered North America almost 150 years earlier while exploring via sailing ships downriver from Panama City laden with Aztec treasures back then known as New Spain
