In the early 1800s, Pharr was a small town in east Texas. It was founded in 1827 by Johnnie DeWitt and his wife, Susannah. The first gun shop in Pharr was opened by DeWitt and his brother-in-law, James McNaught. The store sold pistols and rifles, as well as ammunition. Gun shops were also popular among farmers because they could sell ammunition to their animals while they grazed. The Panic of 1837 caused a decrease in demand for firearms, so Johnnie DeWitt reopened his store in 1840 without selling any guns. However, he did continue to distribute ammo from his store until 1845 when he closed it for good due to financial difficulties. After Johnnie DeWitt's death in 1847, his son Joseph reopened the business with help from other family members. Joseph continued to operate the shop until 1865 when it closed again due to lack of customers. It wasn't until 1903 that a new gun shop opened up at 715 W Main Street called the Western Armory which became one of the most popular gun stores in northeast Texas during World War I because it offered military surplus items such as tanks and artillery pieces at low prices to civilians who wanted to buy them before the war began. Ira Haney operated this store from 1915 until its closure in 1955 due to constant competition from Sam’s Club and Marshall’s Department Stores which had moved into the area after World War I . In 1954 Haney merged with Armoury & Ammunition Store Inc., becoming what is now known as Magpul USA . MagpulUSA remained open until 2001 when it Too was bought out by Bushmaster Firearms Group .

In 1886, Baylor bought much of what remains today of Hecker & Kittrell's platting colony - including most of present-day Pharr - for $500.
