In 1847, a group of men from Pharr, Texas met to discuss the idea of forming a militia. After discussing the matter for some time, they decided on the creation of a gun lock company. The first gun locks were made from post and beam construction and were very simple in design. The company was started by four men- James Hoyle, John Girdler, Amos Knapp and Solomon French. The company became successful and began producing more and more rifle locks. In 1852, they produced their own pistol lock Company which became very successful as well. By 1865, the company had produced over 1,000 pistols and rifles. Throughout its history, the Gun Lock Company has been an important part of Texas history. Pharr, Texas is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Hudspeth County. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico about 26 miles (41 km) southeast of Corpus Christi and 114 miles (193 km) northeast of Houston. Founded in 1836 as a trading post by wagon route pioneer John Crain, Pharr grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as a result of its location on an important shipping point on the Sabine River. By 1860, Pharr had become one of the most significant cotton-growing towns in Texas because its cotton fields stretched along both banks of the river. A cotton gin was built here in 1858, soon followed by a large brick warehouse that served as local courthouse until 1915. In 1881, Pharr was renamed for General Sam Houston after his victory over Mexican forces at Alamo Heights near San Antonio in what is now east-central Texans history known as "The Battle for San Jacinto." In 1886, Pharr became home to The University of Texas at Austin when it was founded by then-president James Hogg from Galveston via private donation from industrialist Edward Coke. A year later, Austin opened its first university class with ten students; today UT Austin has over 100 000 students across campuses in all fifty United States and twenty-nine countries worldwide! In 1914 UT Austin erected a new building designed by Alfred Hirschfeld which still stands today – one of only two buildings on campus still remaining from that era! Additionally, throughout much of this period Pharr remained relatively uneventful despite being situated right next to some world-renowned universities like UT Austin and Baylor College—still one of America's most prestigious college towns! However, World War I interrupted things momentarily andPharr saw some serious activity – including: In 1917–1918 several hundred Confederate Veterans fought in what became known as The Battle for Dallas while also providing support to GenJames Moseley’s successful campaign against Gov Rick Perry’s Machine Party government; Finally following World War I came Prohibition which led to increased crime around town which caused many businesses to close their doors; however overall businessactivity resumed within six months or so after prohibition ended .
