In 1894, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which required firearms dealers to perform safety inspections and provide customers with information about products. This act also provided financial assistance to individuals who bought firearms for use in crime or self-defense. Pharr is a town in northwestern Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Pharr traces its origins to the 1836 arrival of American forces under General Zachary Taylor during the Mexican–American War. The town was founded by Captain John Fayette and his wife Marilla on December 12, 1836. The first school in Pharr opened in 1837. In 1868, Pharr became an independent municipality. The post office was established in 1865, and remained in operation until it closed in 1959. In 1930, Pharr was designated as a National Historic Landmark for its role as the site of the Battle of San Jacinto which helped secure Texas independence from Mexico. In 1942, during World War II, local residents supported American forces when they fought against Imperial Japan; this included contributing food and munitions to the war effort. Pharr is located at (31° 24′ 36″ N 99° 04′ 58″ W). It has an elevation of 571 feet (175 meters). According to the USGS Handbook of Texas Technology Atlas 6th Edition: "Pharr is located about 8 miles [12 kilometers] east-northeast of Lubbock on FM 158."
Pharr was founded in 1845 by parents of Texas settlers, William and Lucy Pharr. The town was named for the father and mother because they had returned to Texas from California. In 1848, the Pharrs moved their business to San Antonio and started a cotton gin there. In 1850, they erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. They were one of the first families to settle in what is now Pharr. The Pharrs donated land to build a school and church, which opened in 1851. They also provided support for early church services in the area. In 1865, the family sold their holdings in San Antonio and moved back to Pharr where they continued farming until 1902 when they passed away.
