In 1906, Charles Lindbergh shook up the world when he flew across the Atlantic with his famous airplane using binoculars. By 1920, binoculars had completely superseded other types of equipment for observing things such as astronomy and weather patterns because their magnification was greater than any other type of equipment at that time. Pharr is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1881 by John Fenton and his wife Anna Jordan Pharr as a summer resort on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The name "Pharr" comes from an early settler's term for "a place where there are palm trees." In 1907, incorporation was granted to Pharr Village by Tarrant County Commissioners Court. On July 1, 1916, the name of the town changed to Pharr after General James K. Polk delivered an address in which he called for Americanization of Mexico and its people. By 1920, when it had grown to over 2,000 residents, Pharr became one of Fort Worth's largest cities and remained so until 1961 when it merged with Arlington into one city. In that year its citizens voted to change their names back to their original townships only to have them restored within two years by county commissioners court order under then-Mayor Willie Brownlow (D). The first post office opened in 1881; it closed in 1902 due to lack of mail volume. A new postal office opened on October 15th 1912 and continued serving until December 6th 1937 due to World War II truce changes which caused numerous closures throughout much of North America; however, as fort worth always maintain its own mail service (the fortworth post office reopened on May 10th 1945), pharr remained primarily served by letter carrier services until 1978 when phone service arrived following construction of the first telephone line between Ft Worth and Arlington Heights; however this line also brought about increased demand for local services resulting in most businesses now having either video or voicemail capabilities as well as WIFI/Internet access through their websites or business applications like Facebook etc.; this has even led some businesses such as Subway sandwich shop(since 1997)to open late into Friday night during off peak hours just so they can keep up with customer demand! Nowadays there are several restaurants inside town limits including Pecan Joe's BBQ & Grille located across from Walmart while Constitution Hill offers a variety of fast food chains including Carl's Jr., Taco Bell, Wendy's and Dunkin' Donuts all within walking distance depending on what you're looking for ie drive-throughs or takeout menus! Pharr is a small town located in the Texas Panhandle of America. It is best known for its association with the Pharr Penitentiary, one of the largest and most important prisons in American history. The prison operated from 1872 until its closure in 1996. The first inhabitants of what would become Pharr were Native American people who used to live near the present day intersection of U.S. Highway 83 and FM 620. In 1836, Spanish explorers discovered this area and named it Rancho Santa Ana de los Padres de Arroyo Grande after Saint Anthony of Padua, who had died during an missionary journey to that area some years earlier. The original settlers were men from Missouri led by John Hargrave and Gideon Barnes, both of whom had been sent to this area as part of a military expedition under General Sam Houston that was trying to capture Mexican strongholds in West Texas. In 1847, Austin entrepreneur James Fenton purchased about 640 acres (248 hectares) around what is now downtown Pharr from José Antonio Núñez de Mora y Aguilera, who had acquired it from Alonso Martinez de la Cruz y Dominguez after he lost an armed battle against Texan forces at Big Bend National Park south of San Marcos on November 17th, 1846. Fenton named his property "Fenton's Rancho" after himself and built a ranch house on it which served as his home until his death in 1901. The construction of the Pharr Penitentiary began in 1872 as part of Reconstruction efforts following the end of the Ulysses S Grant presidency. The penitentiary was considered one of America's largest and most influential prisons at the time; it held over 2,500 inmates at its peak occupancy rate. Many notable prisoners include: Al Capone, Richard Kappeler, Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Joseph Stalin among others
In 1836, Pharr was founded by brothers John and James Pharr. The town quickly became a center for cattle and horse breeding, as well as ranching operations. In 1878, the Pharr brothers sold their holdings in the town to George W. White. White developed the town into an important commercial and political center during the early years of Texas annexation. He also built a number of homes and businesses in the town, which remain extant today.
