In 1947, they sold their property to the city of Amarillo for $1 million. The city built a new municipal building on the site and renamed it City Hall Park in honor of James and Eliza Pharr. Thepharsons descendants continue to live in Pharr and contribute to its economy through farming, manufacturing and business ventures such as cattle herding; fishing; tourism; aviation; golf; and law enforcement services. Pharr, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 2,451 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1874 by settlers from Richmond County, Virginia. It became part of the United States in 1907 and has been located within the present-day borders of Williamson County since that time. The town was named after Pharr Creek which flows through it. The first white settler to live in Pharr was James Hatton who arrived in 1874. By 1886, there were twenty-four residents living in Pharr including twelve farmers and fourteen stockmen. In 1907, when Pharr incorporated as a village, it had a total population of eighty-six people. In 1928, during the Great Depression, many businesses closed and many people lost their jobs. However, due to its location near major highways and its close proximity to Interstate 10 (the main east-west roadway), Pharr slowly rebounded over the next few decades until 1990 when it had an estimated population of just under 1,500 people again. The town was founded in 1851 by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived on the ship "Fenway" from Ireland. It became a post office in 1852 and a city in 1907. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census.
