By 1904, Pharr had over 5,000 residents and was home to a large commercial district that included a flour mill, vegetable garden, bakery, blacksmith shop and several stores. A population of 10,000 was reported by 1910. In 1916, the city ofPharr was established adjacent to the townsite and it quickly reached its peak population of 50,000 in the 1920s. However, due to rapid growth and natural resources depletion, Pharr began to decline during the 1930s until it reached its low point of 10,000 residents in 1950. The city's economic decline continued until it closed its doors for good in 1970.
Pharr is a small town in Morgan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Pharr comes from French and means "place of pearls." The first settler in what is now Pharr Township was James Gentry in 1846. He and his family moved to this area from Concordia Parish, Louisiana. Gentry's brother-in-law, John Fenton, platted this township on March 7, 1851. In 1892, J.B. Baughman established a tannery here that process hides for leather production ashore on the Trinity River near present-day downtown Pharr (now known as the Baughman Park Shopping Center). In 1905, W henceforth it has been called simply "Baughman". At one time there were five businesses in operation here: four tanneries and one grocery store; all closed by 2009 except for an agricultural dealership which still operates today with three stories high on several acres just north of Main Street east of Highway 95.) Some early residents included Aimee Ladd (1850), Dora Morse (1875), John Morse (1900), James Hinton (1910) and Frank Ladd (1920). The Pheasant Run Baptist Church was built in 1907 at mile marker 117 on FM 527 south of town center; it’s now used as a storage building by the ISD school district adjacent to its original church site across FM 1234 from Big League BBQ restaurant which opened in 1984. Pharr experienced some heavy flooding during Hurricane Ike in 2008 which destroyed homes and most roads within a few miles of town center but no lasting damage occurred to any buildings or infrastructure beyond reopened streets within a day or two following landfall although power outages persisted for weeks after Ike had passed overhead with many more homes still without power up until well into November due to incorrect paperwork submitted by insurance companies when claims were processed). Many people who live near water remember seeing Prairies wash away under feet as Ike sailed slowly over them - about once every ten days during those six months - leaving behind vast open areas where trees had been uprooted virtually entire including several hundred cars parked under those now rebuilt homes only nine months later! pharrtexasheralds pharrtx
