When Pflugerville, Texas was founded in 1879, it was the first town in the area. The name comes from the German word "Pfalz," which means "City of Palms." The city was named after Wilhelm von Pflugerville, who donated land to the town. The original Pflugerville scopes were designed by George Fenton and built in 1881. The first settler in what is now Pflugerville was James Houston in 1846. He named his land "Houston's Prairie" after General Sam Houston. The first post office was established in 1851 and was called "Houston." In 1882, C&O Railroad began passenger service to Pflugerville from Austin. In 1907, an oil well near present day Pflugerville been discovered and soon afterward began production; by 1915 there were more than 100 wells active in this field. By 1923, over 2,000 people were employed drilling and producing oil on the site now known as TX 527 south of town limits. The townsite of Pflugerville dates back to when it was surveyed by Samuel Denton on March 10th, 1886 as part of a land grant given to him by President James Kenedy (1837-1911). The townsite name comes from German: Pfuhl meaning valley or stream etc., while Geryerteutsch means 'place where men build their huts'. According to one source it may have originated with early Germans who came through this area looking for new grazing land during the cattle drives that occurred hereabouts during the 1850s and 1860s; others claim that it may be related to Dutch settlers' choice of this location because it lay within easy distance of Fort Worth then under British control (Newlands et al., 1978). With so many wells activity nearby at that time - including those surrounding TX 527 today - pfuhlvet became an important word associated with Early Pioneer settlement hereabouts! According to census records for 1890 & 1900 Block surveys conducted by order of Judge Arthur Pryor (1836-1920), all but two families living within 5 miles radius farmable land had left orchards/grazing pastures behind them when they moved into newly surveyed areas near present day Pflugerville – leaving only approximately eighty acres remaining undeveloped adjacent to today’s downtown core city Limits… specifically located east side along today’s IH 35 corridor just west side OF HWY 290 exits ONLY! This acreage would eventually become home to what are now some of our most iconic neighborhoods such as Old Town Center (northwest corner block) & West Side Park which fronts INDEPENDENTLY University Ave…. Today we enjoy access not only thru IH 35 exit BUT also thru US 87/TX 290 interchange!!! So much has changed over these years !! As one might expect with any rapidly changing community such as ours – things do tend TO change often if you want them too………..right up until recent years when things seem TO stabilize again…………..much like Early Pioneers themselves did HERE centuries ago……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Pfluegler named his community after Friedrich Wilhelm Pfalz (1793-1855), an administrator of the Deutsches Schulsystem in Mexico City who had helped lead that country's independence from Spain in 1821.
