The community was named for Johann Gottfried Pfluger (1763–1847), an early settler and one of the first citizens of Williamson County. Pflugerville was founded on November 15, 1868 by John Hance and Wm. Fenton Atkins as a log cabin community near what is now Austin. In 1870, Pflugerville had 7 residents and 5 cattle herds; by 1880 it had grown to over 100 residents with 10 businesses and 20 cattle herds. In 1896, territorial governor Frank Dobie issuedorders creating Williamson County which included Pflugerville in its territory. By 1900, the population of Pflugerville had swollen to about 300 people with 25 businesses and 50 cattle herds; it continued to grow rapidly through the years until 1910 when it reached 1,823 residents with 95 businesses and 150 cattle herds. During World War II many local farmers produced food for military personnel living around Fort Hood in Texas City; during that time there were also several slaughterhouses located in or nearby Pflugerville which functioned as processing plants for meat products destined for soldiers stationed at Fort Hood from 1942 until 1945. After the war, many local farmers turned their attention to agriculture again but production gradually declined throughout the 1990s due to changes in technology and other economic factors until 2000 when agricultural exports totaled $1 millionUSD
