Pflugerville is primarily an agricultural community with a few manufacturing businesses. The Name Pflugerville comes from the German word "Pfalz" meaning castle or manor house. The first European settlers in what is now Kerr County were Germans who came to the area in the 1840s. They built a farmstead on what is now First Street and comprised of buildings that still remain today including theoriginal kitchen and dining room of the Pflugerville School District Administration Building which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. As Kerr County grew it became necessary for traders and travelers to meet somewhere where they could buy goods and services before continuing their journey westward. In 1851 cattle drives brought settlers to this area, resulting in several farms being established around here including Pflugerville Ranch which still stands today as one of only a handful of ranches remaining in Kerr County dating back to pioneer times. In 1875 James Mclntyre erected a post office at what is now Fourth Street corner Main Road/Pflege Lane and served residents until 1904 when it was moved to present day First Street corner Main Road/Pflege Lane due to limitations on mail delivery within town limits at that time. In 1898 Wm Hickey opened his general store on Third Street corner Main Road/Pflege Lane which continued operation until 1952 when it closed due to lack of customers during World War II because there wasn't enough business available for two stores open at once in an agricultural community like Pflugerville during those days! It wasn’t until 1967 when African American citizens started coming into town and starting businesses like Bob’s Discount Store on Second Street between Main Road/Pflege Lane and Fifth Avenue that things began to change for everyone involved with local life- not just African Americans but also native Texans who had never before interacted with people from out East! Bob's Discount Store soon became one of the most popular places for locals and visitors alike to get their groceries, clothes, gasoline etc., while providing employment for many local people during those early days when agriculture was still considered important economic development within this rural community! A number of other businesses followed over time such as Texaco (now ExxonMobil) pumps at Third Street Corner Main Rd./Pflegel Lane; Kelly's Inn & Bar (now Red Lobster); Golden Corral; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company; McAllister Bros bakery; Daisy’s Diner; Donnybrook Golf Course - home course since 1915; post office annex Historical Society Museum has been open since 1965 In recent years there have been efforts made by members of the community towards revitalization goals both physical and social including plans for building new houses, planting more trees, creating more public amenities like paved streets etcetera however some challenges remain such as lack of money or political will needed behind these endeavors making them difficult if not impossible ever achieve success especially without outside funding

The town began as a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River in 1836 by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky. A post office called Pflugerville was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1886. The first store in Pflugerville was built by J.M. Denny and Wm. Kincaid about 1875; it closed about 1903. The first school was built near present-day Elmendorf Road in 1881 by subscription of citizens; it operated for one year before being moved to its present site near Barton Springs Road. In 1913, Pflugerville became an incorporated village when all of Hudspeth County were annexed into Austin Municipal Districts 1 and 2 (later Travis County). However, annexation did not occur until 1930 due to legal challenges mounted against Austin Municipal Districts 1 and 2 by pioneer farmers who felt they had been wrongfully taken away from them while still living within their own county borders As an incorporated village, Pflugerville possessed some municipal powers that were not granted to municipalities within Travis County such as fire prevention and building codes; however these functions were eventually transferred to Travis County when that county formed full government status following the 1970 census During World War II, many soldiers served with distinction here including General George Custer who fought at Little Big Horn In 1954, PFLUGERVILLE TEXAS INC., founded by John Waddell Poston Sr., became one of 5500 businesses licensed to do business under Title 11 of the United States Code . On July 15th 1959 local residents ratified a resolution authorizing cityhood which charter amendments made effective on November 3rd 1960 establish PFLUGERVILLE as a city with Mayor Harry Byrd as its first City Councilmember . On December 4th 1960 Charles Ellington became Mayoraltyddedictator after defeating incumbent Byrd 80% - 20% . Consequently Ellington assumed executive authority over all city affairs including: zoning ordinances & regulations; finance & budgeting; elections; public works department; water supply & effluent disposal ; planning & development ; social services department
