In 1872, Pflugerville became a town when it was annexed by Austin. The town's name comes from Prussia's founder, Friedrich Wilhelm von Pflugerville (1795–1871), who named his ranch "Pflegerville" after his father-in-law's birthplace in Germany. In 1901, the Austin & Texas Central Railroad built the first line through Pflugerville and began serving the community as well as parts of Round Rock and nearby Lubbock. The railroad helped make Pflugerville an important transportation center for central Austin and contributed to its growth as a hamlet during the early 20th century. Over time, residents have developed many businesses and occupations around their churches and schools; these include agriculture (cattle, pigs), manufacturing (paintball guns and ammunition), retail trade (stores selling gasoline & oil products), services (accounting/finance services, doctor/legal services), real estate ( subdivisions developments with homes or apartments ), farming (growing corn) and tourism (visiting ancient ruins near Austin).
