It is located in the Houston-Galveston-Baytown metropolitan area and has a population of about 95,000. The name Pflugerville comes from German immigrants who named their community "Pfalzerville". The first settlers in Pflugerville were farmers and pioneers who arrived in 1837 during the Mexican–American War. They were motivated to settle because of the new land grant that had been given to them by President Santa Anna as part of his effort to create a new major center for Texas. The grant also included land for a military fortification called San Jacinto Barracks. When hostilities ended, the settlers continued to arrive and build up what became known as Pflugerville Township. In 1847, they voted to change their name to Fluling after Michael Fluhrer, an American fur trader who had settled in Germany before coming toTexas in 1826. In 1850, the town began receiving immigrants from Germany through Ellis Island - among them was Johann Friedrich Müller (1802-1872), who would play an important role in shaping Pflugerville's history as its first Mayor and later its first United States Senator from New Mexico Territory (1913-1929). With contributions from many residents and businesses over time, Fluling grew rapidly into one of North America's leading agricultural communities with more than 1 million acres (500 km2) of irrigated agricultural land alone by 1930. Many local landmarks – such as First Baptist Church and Old Main School – remain extant today after being renovated or rebuilt multiple times over the years. In 1933, during World War II when Nazi Germany invaded Europe, parts of Texas were bombed by Ulysses S Grant Air Force bombers aimed at destroying bridges across the Rio Grande River near Arbogast Point near Brownsville; this caused extensive damage both within PFLUGERVILLE itself but also throughout adjacent Harris County which housed Houston at that time.
