Pflugerville is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,010 at the 2010 census. The name comes from German settlers' use of "Pfeil" (a fork) and "Gerville" (very large field), which together formed the word Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Garmisch-Partenkirchen Township). The first permanent settler in Pflugerville was David Fenton in 1847. By 1870, there were 10 families living in Pflugerville. cotton farmers and their slaves worked the land until 1865 when the American Civil War ended and slavery was abolished. Many of these men had served in Confederate soldiering units. The post office called Pflugerville "Pfeil" because it resembled a fork with a long stem. It opened on October 3, 1875, under the name of Sibleyville. On December 1, 1907, it changed its name to Pluggerville after Jeptha Pluggs who donated land for the Townsite Development Corporation. A fire destroyed part of downtown Pluggerville on July 4th 1898 but no one was hurt as most of the buildings were standing or had been rebuilt by that time In 1902 an addition to nearby Planters Chapel Church increased church attendance by 150%. A few years later another addition made plans for a school within walking distance so classes started on Monday mornings instead of Fridays like they did at Planters Chapel Church . In 1915 US Post Office moved from Planters Chapel to what is now Main Street and services continued here until 1973 when they moved into their present building on Walnut Street near Interstate 35E . From 1945 until 1957 all mail went through Dallas before returning to Pluggerville; this change was due to World War II when Fort Worth became an open city
