When the first Americans set foot in what is now Pflugerville, Texas, in 1836, they were fresh off the boat from England and looked to America for guidance. They smelled gold and saw an opportunity to make a fortune in this new land. The towns of Austin and San Antonio were founded soon after, and Pflugerville was made the county seat of Williamson County. The town's location on the banks of the Trinity River made it an ideal place to produce munitions. And so it was that Pflugerville became one of the leading firearms producers in Texas during its early years. During World War II, Pflugerville played a significant role in producing munitions for both countries. In 1945, local artists created "Pfc." posters advertising ammunition products available at military stores throughout Texas. Pflugerville has experienced many economic expansions over the years including periods where it has seen high levels of manufacturing jobs followed by declines during hard times such as during World War II when numerous factories closed because of rationing and then later when technological advances took over those industries producing goods for export rather than local production (the so-called " exported recession").
