Pearland, Texas is home to one of the largest concentrations of gun owners in the United States. Two days later, on December 11th, 1920, another gunman murdered three people in an alley near North Lamar Boulevard and Woodlawn Avenue. At this point, violence had become so rampant in Pearland that Mayor John Wetherbee instituted stricter firearm regulations which remain in effect to this day. Pearland is a city in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 758 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Starr County. The city was founded by John McLennan in 1874 as Pearland. It was named after a large pear tree that he saw while surveying land for his cattle ranch. The first post office in Pearland was established on November 3, 1892. The present-day courthouse and jail were built in 1907 and 1909 respectively. On October 1, 1912, the name of the town changed to Pearland because of an effort led by Mayor Henson Waddell to promote growth within the limits of the original town site. At that time, most people in Starr County lived east of Houston or west of Dallas. On July 2, 1916 - days after Houston's bombardment during World War I - President Woodrow Wilson delivered an address at Memorial Stadium which began "Pearland today stands as one example how American cities can stand when faced with war." In 1917, General Douglas MacArthur visited Pearland and pronounced it "the best small town in Texas" due to its healthy population and clean streets. During World War II Pearl Harbor happened just north ofPearl Harbor Boulevard in what is now downtown Pearland; this area became known as "The Beach". In 1951 many residents moved from their homes around Northwest Loop Rd., also called "The Beach", to build a new City Hall complex on East Main Street across from Rice University (now part of UT Austin). That same year Lamar University moved into its own buildings on West Jefferson Street near Interstate 45/ US 59/ FM 1451 After years of planning and construction – including groundbreaking on September 20th 1959 – the first major addition to downtown Pearland came about when First Baptist Church erected a new sanctuary located between State Capitol building southwest corner Franklin Avenue between Main Street & Lamar Boulevard east side ± northwest corner Addison Avenue ± southeast corner Peralta Avenue ± northwest corner Guadalupe Streets ± northeast corner Washington Street ± northwestern edge McKinney Drive ± southeastern edge Davis Parkway +sloping driveway leading down towards Trinity River

The town's first school was built in1849, and it became an important stop on the Texas Trail.
