Pearland is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 34,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The first people to live in what is now Pearland were Quahog Indians. They hunted and gathered food near the mouth of Buffalo Bayou. In 1836, Congress passed an act that designated Hudspeth County as a land grant to John Fenton for his part in helping to drive out the Comanche from Texas. This land grant included what is now Pearland. The first post office was established in 1837, and by 1860, there were 10 towns in Hudspeth County with a total population of 1,023 people. In 1876, James Murchison founded the Houston Cotton Oil Company on the south side of Buffalo Bayou. The company grew so quickly that it built its own facility on Railroad Avenue in downtown Pearland. Murchison donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land toPearland for cityhood on November 3rd,1896; and when Houston annexed Pearland into its city limits on January 1st, 1897, incorporation became complete. The growth of Pearland led to development along railroad corridors which soon attracted industry and businesses such as Murchison'sHouston Cotton Oil Company and American Tobacco Company headquarters building still standing today at 410 Brazos Street off I-10 West (now home to Midtown Dallas). Today many notable companies have their offices or warehouses here including ChevronTexaco Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Abbott Laboratories Inc., McDonald's Corporation and Pohlman Electric Supply Co.. On October 15th 1954 local citizens voted by referendum not to annex into Houston because they felt that annexation would lead to job loss due to duplication of resources within the city limits while also costing taxpayers more money than they would receive back through taxes alone
Pearland was founded on December 24, 1836 by James Fenton and others as the town of Post Oak. On April 15, 1849, it was renamed to Pearland after General Sam Houston's successful campaign against Mexico in the Mexican-American War. The city voted to secede from Texas on November 3, 1861, during the American Civil War. During Reconstruction, Pearland became a center for black African Americans' music and artisanship. The city experienced significant growth following World War II as new industries developed in the area such as shipbuilding and aerospace engineering. In recent years, Pearland has experienced declines in its population and economy.
