Pearland is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. Pearland is the second-largest city in Midland County after Odessa. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The town was founded by Mormons in 1845 as a wagon stop on the Pecos River near present-day Pearland. The name "Pearland" comes from Mormon leader Brigham Young's plantation there called "The pearls." In 1872, when Sam Houston and his followers drove Mexicans out of east Texas, they burned down some Mormon buildings in Pearland to drive them out again. In 1886, John Hance built a small cotton gin and dry goods store on what is now Main Street in Pearland. He became one of the most influential men in early Pearlanders because he helped found many churches and organizations including the Baptist Association of Texas (now Baptist Temple), Methodist Episcopal Church (now First Methodist Church), American Indian Missionary Society (now American Indian University), and Modern Orthodox Jewish Congregation Beth Israel (then known as Temple Emanuel). Hance also served as Mayor of PearLAND from 1907 to 1912 and Mayor Pro Tem for two years during World War I before stepping down to run for office again. In 1916 he was elected to serve as State Senator from District 7; he would serve until his death in 1933. In 1923 Josephine Lamar married James Allred, Sr., an attorney who later became mayor of Dallas; they had two children: Josephine Allred Browning Lamar III and James Allred Lamar IV. As mayor Lamar worked to improve public transportation options through his administration's Air Line Company program which offered discounted fares on airline tickets; this led to greater demand for air travel within Texan cities such as Houston and Dallas throughout the 1920s and 1930s that saw growth rates that dwarf those seen nationally during this time frame. On November 5th, 1927 Hurricane Clare made landfall along Galveston Bayou just south of downtown Galveston killing over 100 people with damage estimated at $100 million dollars according to contemporaneous reports . Clare caused catastrophic flooding across much of East Texas with much loss of life due primarily to heavy rains that swept through rural areas hard hit by high winds gusts up to 150 mph . James Allred Lamar IV inherited his father's mayoral position upon Josephine Browning Lamar III's death due only days prior . James A Larmar IV would lead Pearson into great success both politically & economically during his tenure becoming one of Texarkana’s Most Powerful Men During His Time Earning nicknames like “Mayor pro tem” & “Governor pro tempore” thruout The Great Depression era !!
