When Austin was founded in 1836, there were no settlements within Webb County other than scattered family farms that provided subsistence farming for their families. However, by 1876 there had been several hundred people living in what is now Pearland because of development around Fort Sam Houston during the presettlement period following Mexican annexation of Texas in 1835. From this beginning there were two waves of settlement - those who came from southern Texas looking for land to ranch or build homes on and those seeking access to water resources that would become important later on such as Pearl River Basin oil fields developed along Buffalo Bayou north of town. By 1870 many residents had moved into what is now Pearland from areas including Georgetown, Killeen, Euless, Live Oak Covella Springs Resort & Casino & Convention Center etc.. In 1886 a group led by Jens Olsen set out to explore land east of San Antonio which they thought would be available for ranching given its good soil quality and proximity to water supplies found near Grand Prairie TX., which at that time extended into parts of Colorado and Oklahoma Territory In 1889 they met with some Texans who had come downriver from Galveston/Houston Heights composed mostly mechanics who wanted to open up some lands further east where they could find saltpeter mines but never did due to lack of interest or money from others involved like John Denton who owned much more valuable land closer toHouston TX., so they journeyed back upriver again with more success only this time finding goldfields beyond Dallas TX., so instead returned home with enough gold bullion worth over $1 millionUSD which stayed within their family until it was sold off piecemeal through various business ventures eventually becoming Consolidated Mining Company Limited which controlled about 50% interest in about 100 acres across four different mines all producing lead ores until 1922 when it closed down due to low prices & competition caused by larger companies buying out smaller ones
