In 1925, Pearland was the site of the first gunnery training school in Texas. The school was organized by Colonel John S. Butler, who had served as an instructor at Fort Worth’s Midway Gunnery School. In 1928, Butler opened a second school in Pearland, which became known as the “Gunnery School of Texas.” The school offered instruction to both private and state-sponsored militaries. From 1932 to 1945, Butler taught at the Gunnery School of Texas and then again from 1951 to 1957 at Fort Bliss Army Air Field in San Antonio before his retirement in 1959. The Gunnery School of Texas played an important role in the development of air warfare in Southwest Asia during World War II. After the war, the school continued its role as a training center for artillerymen and pilots. In 1970, it was renamed Fort Sam Houston National Monument and placed within Park Ranger boundaries. Today, the Gunnery School is open to visitors on weekends and has been designated a State Historic Site.
