Pearland is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 21,717 at the 2010 census. Pearland is the county seat of Brazoria County. It was founded by English settlers in 1836 as a small community on the banks of the San Jacinto River. The town grew rapidly around oil and gas operations and became known for its pearls, diamonds, and other jewelry exports from its mines. In 1978, Pearland incorporated as an unincorporated community to avoid being annexed by Brazoria County. The first settlers in what is now Pearland arrived on horseback from Virginia in December 1836. They were led by Captain James Mosely and his family; they established themselves near modern-day Pearland on land that had been given to them by General Sam Houston. The area would become one of the most important oil towns in Texas due to its access to natural resources such as oil shale and natural gas deposits. By 1840, pearls had become an important part of local trade and were being exported to Europe through various ports such as Liverpool, London, Rotterdam, Amsterdam (now Utrecht), Genoa (now Milan), Barcelona (now Seville), Paris (now Lyon), Marseilles (formerly Toulon), Cádiz (Córdoba), Valencia ( Alicante ), Cartagena de Indias , Lima , Quito , Asunción , Temuco and Bogotá . In 1876 Texaco began developing land south of present-day Pearland along the San Jacinto River for their refinery project which would produce gasoline and kerosene for American consumers at that time. That year also saw the founding of Baylor University which would later become one of Texas' leading universities. President George Washington Harris laid out what is now downtown Pearland on November 15th, 1876 when he announced plans for a new city located between Clear Lake Dam downstream from Baylor University eastward into Brazoria County towards Waco . On December 3rd 1870 then-Governor David Atchison approved Harris's plan with only two conditions: that Baptist churches be allowed within limits so that people could worship God without fear of taxes; and that nolater than May 1st 1870 all surface streets be named after Creek Indians who had fought against Spanish colonial forces during Mexican Independence . A committee consisting of mayor John Hogg chairman Jno Templeton physician Sallie Brawley surveyors Hiram Blanton John Ennis James Hogg Jr., Wm Haggin & Chas Chandler met at Clear Lake on January 2nd 1870 determined there were too many streets bearing Indian names already in existence within city limits so they recommended choosing new street names beginning with “E” or those ending with “G” – Elam Street/Moses Green Road/George Hearn Avenue/Edgar Rice Burleson Avenue/Wm Haggin Boulevard/John Sprague Longstreth Avenue/James Addison Gore Boulevard etc.–thus becoming Streetsboro Heights before finally settling upon Brentwood Drive which still exists today as one block wide arteries serving both cities today! No less than thirteen creek tribe leaders signed a letter dated February 8th 1870 pledging their support for annexation into Brazoria County should it occur; this was done despite reservations existing within Brazoria County itself including Mount Belford where Creek tribal leaders resided! During World War II much activity took place centered around Baylor University where research was conducted into using incendiary munitions against Nazi Germany during Operation Overlord while faculty members worked directly with Boeing Aircraft Company manufacturing military Avionics components utilizing vacuum tubes !! Finally disbanding effective September 1945 following World War II ended adjacent Homestead AFB closed allmilitary functions there effective Nov 1945 until current day lease expired Dec 2002
The Pearland area was founded in 1836 by General Sam Houston. The town was named for the pear tree that grew near the original site of the present-day city. The first settlers arrived in 1837 and began to build homes and a small school. By 1840, Pearland had a population of about 150 people. In 1849, the Texas Legislature passed a bill providing for an ecclesiastical district within central Texas. This district was to be known as "Houston". The name change came about because at that time most of the land in Houston County belonged to Spanish Catholic priests who used their power to forbid Baptist missionaries from proselytizing in their territory. In 1860, after an election where no one affiliated with either party won majority office, Texans voted not to recognize Houston as their new state capital and instead chose Fort Worth as their new capital. However, many residents of Pearland continued to support Houston because they thought it would be easier to get goods and services available on their doorstep than if they traveled far away to Fort Worth. On November 3, 1861, during what is now called the Battle of Black Jack (also known as the Battle of Humble), members of both parties fought hand-to-hand warfare over control of a small agricultural field located near modern day downtown Pearland. Ultimately, Confederate forces were victorious and local militia loyal to Houston took back control of the field; this event is consideredDate Unknown Event
