In 1836, Anglo Texans founded Fort Worth on Red River opposite San Gabriel Mission; this fort served as a depot for goods moving between Texas and Mexico before it fell to Mexican forces during the Texan Invasion of 1840. Antoine Lavoisier discovered nicotine while exploring Veracruz Peninsula and made an early discovery when testing tobacco products from his lab at Fort Worth against those from Texas; this event helped spur American industry across Mexico into production beginning with cigars by José Joaquin Marcos y Costilla in 1795. In 1850, Judge James Bowie purchased land northeast of present day Pasadena from Manuel Nieto for $5 million dollars; this acquisition allowed Bowie to establish himself as one of North America's leading land developers including interests in ranchos and towns throughout California and Webb County (now Austin). In 1865, Governor Edward Everett Porter approved plans to build the Union Pacific Railroad through Pasadena; construction began just south ofpresent day downtown Pasadena on April 12, 1870 and would eventually stretch all the way to El Paso along its route past present day Interstate 5 near Arroyo Seco State Park on September 26, 1976! A fire destroyed much part of Downtown Los Angeles on December 6th 1915 which left about 100 people homeless but reopened two weeks later with some new buildings including The Hollywood Palladium which became known as "the Dormitories" due to their use by various movie stars such as Norma Shearer and Clark Gable

In 1836, Josefa Ortega y Gasset surveyed and named present-day Pasadena after Mount Pleasant, one of two peaks she observed while hiking near San Gabriel Hill across Buffalo Bayou from what is now Downtown Houston. At that time Houston was only a small community known as Huntsville Creek Settlement due to its location on Huntsville Creek between Clear Fork (now Sam Rayburn Freeway) and Galveston Bayou
