It is located on the Santa Monica Mountains about 26 miles (41 km) east of downtown Dallas and just south of Houston. Pasadena was founded in 1887 by John Wesley Powell as a station on his first journey through Central America. The first settlers who arrived in what is now Pasadena were Ishmael Smith and his family from Georgia. They built a log cabin on Rancho Cabeza de Vaca near present-day Covina Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. In 1887, John Wesley Powell reached Pasadena from West Texas on his third trip through Central America with a group of American soldiers under General Antonio Lopez Bidetto. He named the new settlement after himself - "Pasadena" meaning "mountain peak". The town grew rapidly during its early years, thanks to railroads that connected it to nearby Dallas and Houston. By 1907, Pasadena had established itself as an major cotton industry center with many large cotton plantations including those of Ewing Robinson and John Lubbock. However, during the Great Depression many small businesses closed their doors due to difficulty getting financing for new equipment or expansions; this led to increased social unrest in Pasadena which eventually culminated in two fistfights between police officers over control of an anti-union rally that took place outside City Hall on December 5th 1934
Pasadena, Texas was originally a part of the Mexican province of Alta California. On February 14, 1836, Mexico ceded this territory to the United States after being defeated in the Mexican-American War. The city's name is derived from two Spanish words: pasa (pass) and tejas (thighs).
