In the early 1800s, Paris, Texas was a small town of just over 1,000 people. The local post office was the only place where letters could be sent and received. Residents relied on natural light to see things like newspapers and daily mail. The first person to develop an optical instrument in Paris was Pierre-Simon Laplace. He used a mirror to view Polaris from his home in 1784. In 1801, Louis-Jacques Conte developed a system for sending messages across long distances with Morse code using mirrors and lenses. In 1827, Nicholas-Jacques Conte created the world's first two-way mirror communication system between New York City and Paris by putting two mirrors within range of each other at Fort Tryon Park in Manhattan. This project is also known as Project Clinton because it helped establish U.S.-French relations during the 1830s Egyptian War (1830-1834). During World War II, France built more than 2,500 radar towers all over its territory in order to defend against Axis submarines; one of these towers stood in downtown Paris at Place de la Concorde—the world’s most famous intersection at that time! In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced that he would recognize Vichy France as the official government of France after the Normandy Invasion; this event is generally considered to have been the beginning of World War II in Europe.
