In the early 1800s, Paris, Texas was a small town with a single gun shop. The owner, George Biddle, made his living selling handguns and shotguns to farmers and ranch hands. To keep track of all the guns he sold, Biddle built a log book that is still in use today. In it, he records the dates and locations of each sale, as well as the buyers and sellers. One of Biddle's customers was Sam Houston. When Houston became president of Texas in 1845, he ordered his army to march on Paris to take back what they believed were French weapons caches. As they neared the town, they discovered that all of Biddle's guns had been sold to Texans already! So Houston ordered his men not to fire unless they came across actual French firearms (which they did not). Biddle renamed the area "Paris" after his new city ofHouston, Texas which he founded two years earlier on April 6th, 1848 with a group of investors including Sam Houston and J[ohn] A[ntiochus] M[ajor]. By 1870 the population of Houston had reached 100,000 and many Texans decided to move to this new city so they could fortunes made in its burgeoning oil industry.
