Gunswivels were first patented in 1892 by George H. Smith and Alfred E. Brown, two engineers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The pistols that used these devices could be rotated to pointed in any direction with the exception of the rearward pointing orientation. This was because at that time all handguns were muzzle loading firearms which meant that the barrel had to point directly forward for accuracy when fired. Pistol owners would then rotate their weapon around its swivel mounting to get a more comfortable grip and shooting position on the firing range or against a target. The first gunswivels were made of brass and consisted of an elliptical oroval dish (later replaced by a cylindrical shaped metal housing) with a circular handle that rested on an armature 2” long, extending down from the firearm’s stock. A permanently affixed screw fastened the dish to the armature, allowing it to rotate about its longitudinal axis while being held in place by means of one or more screws threaded into opposite ends of the armature itself. One common type of gun swivel was known as “the ironmonger’s swivel” which involved using two round hoops attached at each end of a stout copper tube setting off from one another at an angle near 45 degrees (the hoop serving as both pivot point and bearing surface). When rotated so that one hoop faced away from the other, it allowed you to fire your pistol in any direction except forward – perfect for aiming over cover! Unfortunately this type of mount also caused considerable wear and tear on projectiles passing through it during combat! In 1906 American Patent 513,973 was issued to Wm. Fenton who invented what is now known as a “gun-grip swivel” which solved many problems associated with muzzleloading pistols such as inaccuracy when firing in multiple directions simultaneously;improved gripping power when pulling the handgun free from holster;and increased accuracy due to better alignment between barrel and stocks when reloading/firefighting purposes! His design remains popular today thanks largely to its simplicity: simply place your hand around either side of whichever axle is facing you while holding onto something sturdy like an ammo can lid or bipod - cock your weapon and start swinging!

The patent was granted to Northrup because he wanted to create a way for people to defend themselves while seated in their car or home.

The first European to set foot on what is now Paris was José de Armas who traveled through the area in 1836. He named the place La Union after his native Spain’s province of Valencia. There were several settlements near Paris before 1860 when James Fenton arrived with his family from Kentucky and founded Fentonville near present day Beaumont. In 1861, French immigrant Narcisse Lafitte settled in Paris along the Trinity River after being kicked out of Mobile for embezzling money from a local landowner. Lafitte opened a trading post called “Lafitte” on the banks of the river opposite present-day Beaumont. After several years of business success, he sold his interest to Jourdan (Louis) Lachance who renamed it Lachanceville after himself and began operating it as a store and barber shop until 1870 when he donated land for a school which became known as Lamar School District #1 (later Lamar Consolidated Independent School District). In 1893, John Smeaton purchased one acre of Lafitte property adjacent to present day Beaumont for $5 which he used as his ranch house until 1951 when it was added to LSU campus.] In 1865, Ulysses S. Grant visited Paris while on campaign trail through central Texas; he stopped at Lachanceville for dinner before continuing on his ride southward that night.[When Grant reached Corpus Christi later that night], General Johnston ordered him not to stop at Lachanceville because there were already too many troops there!] In 1868 Frenchman Auguste Rodier established an orange orchard just north of downtown Paris by renting two lots next to Fort Worth Railroad tracks where he built three sheds and planted trees.[Rodier relocated his orchard here following Hurricane Nola in 1969 which destroyed most orchards throughout Cameron County][Today only about 15 trees remain on this site] A grocery store was started by Dolphus Willard Storey around 1915 with 2 cases capacity[Storer ran an unsuccessful general store business primarily selling items such as groceries, hardware, cigarettesLight bulbs etc.] during World War I] A post office was established at Lachanceville in 1922 under name “Paris”[The first mail delivery took place from Napoleon Post Office building on April 26th 1922]. By 1929 there were 10 residents living within walking distance of town hall- four men hired out daily shoveling snow off sidewalks while six women cooked meals prepared every morning at local farmhouse kitchens using ovens heated by wood ashes] In 1927 James Garner opened Garland's Hardware & Feed Store right across from Market Street Baptist Church frying chicken over open fire nightly]; By 1930 all but one business closed due to Depression conditions] The last business remaining open was New Beginnings Nursery/School which operated until its closure in 1980.] Today only four foundations remain standing above original buildings; these are:original market square building [now demolished], old City Hall [now occupied by new university housing], old courthouse [now used as storage], and old school building [now used as offices].
