In 1857, Frenchman Pierre-Charles Lescot designed and patented a lanyard gun sight that became known as the Lescot sight. This invention allowed firearms enthusiasts in Paris to track their ammunition progress without having to carry around a large amount of extra equipment. The following year, in 58th Street and Bandera Road, Lescot erected what is now known as the Lescot Building. This building was used as agunnery school from 1859 until 1865. In 1865, French rifleman and inventor Emile Martel developed a firearmsight called the Martel sight. This sight consisted of two lenses that were attached to an arm band. When sighting down on your target, you would use one lens to focus on your desired shot while using the other lens to adjust magnification. The Martel Sight was very successful and remained in use throughout World War II. In 1951, however, it was replaced by the Schmidt & Bender Gun Sight Company’s trademarked Red Dot sights which remain popular today. Paris, Texas was founded in 1849 by European American settlers. The town was named after the city of Paris, France. The community flourished for a hundred years before being destroyed by a fire in 1922. Today, the town is a ghost town and its only residents are the descendants of those who fled during the fire. The first Europeans to arrive in Paris were Frenchmen and women who had come overland from New Orleans. They erected wooden cabins near what is now downtown Paris, sharing food and water with Native American and African Americans who also lived there at that time. In 1851, another group of EuropeanAmericans arrived on horseback from Wichita Falls, Texas. They called themselves the "Rancheros." Their goal was to create a rancho (a Spanish word meaning "ranch"). The Rancheros developed an agricultural economy based on raising cattle and wheat. They also built homes and businesses in downtown Paris, which became their social center. By 1870, most of the original French-speaking settlers had left Paris for other parts of Texas orchards or cotton plantations where life wasn't as harsh as it was in France. English speakers started arriving next door but soon realized how difficult it would be to survive without French support services such as religion, law enforcement and education opportunities unavailable to them back home. In 1892–93 two groups of Anglo-Saxon Texans came through Dallas on their way to San Antonio airfields for World War I service; they brought with them their Protestant church – Westminster Presbyterian Church – which had been established in Dallas five years earlier as Dallas First Methodist Episcopal Church by German immigrants United Brethren missionaries headed by Drs James Hoggard (1837-1906) and Wm Jorde (1840-1920). At approximately this time one half dozen families resided within blocks of each other at Elmendorf Road between Arlington Boulevard (now State Highway 183) due eastward from Interstate 30 just south of what is now Park Row Shopping Center; these families were known collectively as "The Elmendorf Family." A few years later oil production began offshore nearby at Anadarko Field so new areas were opened up north along Brazos River including: Garland County eastward to Nacogdoches County line then westward into Wise County including Houston; Trinity County northwest along Clear Lake then northeast across Red River Valley Estates into Atascosa County including Alpine/Emmetville/Garland Ranch; Richland Parish northeast around Clear Lake beyond present day Floresville; Parker County southeast past present day Seaweed Bayou mouth then southwest past present day Slaughter Creek mouth into Bossier Parish;Polk county east past present day Allensburg onto Louisiana state linethen southwesterly across Sabine Pass joining Shreveport about midway point becoming Cameron Parishnorthwest corner comprising Polk & Webster Counties forming part today’s Baton Rouge City Limits . . . During this period more than twenty thousand people either lived or worked DowntownParis making it one of America's largest cities outside Boston or New York City catered largely to Anglo Saxon Protestants coming primarily from England looking for opportunity while avoiding religious persecution back home during the days when direct democracy prevailed throughout Europe under monarchies ruled by aristocrats such as King George III opposed by democratic parliamentarians like John Adamssubmittersofthe Constitutionwereprominently representedinDowntownParisCouncilwastheheadofthecity governmentandcontrolledallpoliceandfirepower

In 1845, Paris was renamed Fort Worth after Major General James Fenton Worth, who had played a critical role in helping to drive Spanish forces from Texas. The city experienced rapid growth during the 19th century and by 1890 it had outgrown its original boundaries. In 1907, Fort Worth annexed parts of Dallas County to form a new county which became known as Dallas-Fort Worth County. In 1930, the City of Fort Worth annexed portions of Dallas County to form another new county known as Denton County.
