In early 1881, Frenchman Charles de Gaulle set off from Paris in a small, two-horsepowered cart to explore the Lone Star State. He was never seen again but his ideas about Texas took root and soon people were packing their bags and planning their travel to the state. One of the first Europeans to visit Texas was American cavalry general Zachary Taylor who toured the area in 1876. After touring Dallas' business district he went on to Fort Worth and then Corpus Christi before returning home to Illinois. A year later, on October 28th, 1878, French traveler Alphonse de Lamartine visited Texas and wrote about his experiences in an article for Theophile Gautier's magazine. The following year saw another visitor: Spanish adventurer Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who landed at Galveston Bay on December 12th, 1879 with his army of 5000 men looking for a route into Mexico. His party included General Antonio López Texeira (1822-1892), Commander of Mexican troops stationed at San Antonio; Francisco Javier Valverde y Tavera (1828-1911); Manuel García Márquez (1847-1920); Joséfa Ponce de Leon y Salinas (1793-1887); Nicolás Maduro Sánchez(?-1927) and Fernando VII del Castillo(?-1666). They were met by Lieutenant Colonel James Bowie who led them into Presidio Heights where they made camp for the night before moving on next morning towards Lady Bird Johnson's rancho Gutiérrez near Refugio Grande. On January 8th 1840 Governor John Fetterman signed an act creating Refugio Grande as a military post within Travis County in order "to provide protection against Comanches extending through this region."
