In the early 1800s, Paris, Texas was a small town of only 10,000 people. The town was founded in 1836 by Judge James Hogg and his wife, Eliza. The Hoggs were pioneers in the area and their home is still standing today. In 1872, they sold their home to Andrew Armstrong and his family. Armstrong became one of the largest landholders in Paris, with over 350 acres (160 hectares). Armstrong used his land to grow crops and raise livestock. He also built a sawmill on his property which produced lumber for ships arriving at Galveston Bay. The mill was destroyed by a fire in 1898, but Armstrong rebuilt it and continued operating it until 1957. When Andrew Armstrong died in 1922, he bequeathed his land to the city of Paris for use as an open-air museum dedicated to gun history and culture. In the 1840s, Paris, Texas was a small ranch town located in Hudspeth County. The first post office was founded in 1845, and the first settler was Abshire Ladd. A Mormon Battalion arrived in Paris in 1846 and began building a temple there. In 1865, the Frenchtown Baptist Church was built and served as the town's church until it burned down in 1915. The Paris School District #1 opened its doors on October 1, 1907. It is one of only two school districts in Hudspeth County that have been continuously open since before Roe v. Wade legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.
