In 1907, the Texas Legislature created Hudspeth County out of parts of Travis and Williamson Counties, including Pampa and Fort Worth; however, these changes did not take effect until 1912 when they were reorganized into Hudspeth County as part of a larger change that addedAustin to the state docket (amending various statutes). Pampa, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is a town in Constable County. As of the 2010 census, Pampa had a population of 1,561. The name "Pampa" is Spanish for "place where there are water buffalo." The town was founded by pioneer settlers in 1879 and became a full-time community in 1902. In 1935, Pampa was named one of the top 10 places to live in America by Newsweek magazine. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pampa were two Frenchmen, Jules Ferry and Georges-Jacques Conte, on their way from New Orleans to San Antonio in 1827. They stopped at an Indian trading post near present-day Waco on their way back from Fort Worth Mission Santa Anna (1824). A Canadian trader called John Denton visited the area in 1829 while on his way north from Lubbock; he noted that there were many water buffalo grazing near the mission site. In 1881, Methodist Episcopal missionaries founded Stakes Point Mission which served as both a chapel and trading post near modern day Pampa. The post office at Stakes Point Mission was established on July 15, 1880 under the name "Pampa". That same year, one hundred fifty acres (40 hectares) of land along Buffalo Bayou south of present day Pampa were bought from Fernando de la Hoz y Costilla by James Ewing for $2 per acre ($10/ha). From this purchase came much development within Pampa over the years - including several small breweries which developed into larger operations such as First Light Brewery and Eastern Brewing Company before Prohibition destroyed most alcohol production in Texas during the 1920s. An early resident account records that Buffalo Bayou flowing through town had been “a great source” for freshwater fish but also “a great place for deer hunting” because its banks sloped gradually downhill until they reached high ground beyond which no game could escape capture by hunters who set up stations at points above water's surface using long poles with branches inserted into holes drilled into earthbanks above high enough elevation to beckon potential prey below; these stations allowed menaced animals such as buffaloes to cross without being captured alive According to historian Vernon McGee: “It would be almost fifteen years before any formal industry appeared anywhere within sight or hearing of either group – until automobiles arrived – when farmers started planting cotton along Buffalo Bayou between Old Town [Pampa] and Dallas Boulevard… By 1915 more than eighty businesses operated out of town limits alone” succinctly summarizing how things have changed since then!
