Pampa is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,020 at the 2010 census. Pampa is located on the eastern edge of Medina County and is bordered by Slaughtertown to the north and west and Canyon City to the south. U.S. Route 90 passes through Pampa, leading east to Medina and west to Wichita Falls. The first settlement in what is now Pampa was made in 1851 when David Crouch erected a cabin on an old ranch near present-day Union Elementary School. In 1855, Hance Coulter built a log cabin on the same site as present-day Union Middle School; it burned down in 1909. A post office called "Pampa" was established in 1865, but no mail ever arrived from that location because of difficulties getting horses upriver for transportation to town due to flooding during bad weather seasons. In 1872, Tom Kline settled near the current intersection of US 90 and FM 529 about four miles northeast of present-day Pampa; he named his settlement "Kline's Post Office". By 1880, Kline had moved all his stock into what are now Cambridge Township (now part of Grant) so he could continue using his new post office name which was then shortened to "Coulter's Post Office". In 1902, Wm Jethro Quintero opened a general store at what is now lower Union Avenue/FM 528 south of Kline's Post Office; it operated until 1954 when it closed due to financial problems. The last resident in Kline's Post Office died in 1984.
