Pampa,Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. Pampa is home to the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas A&M Aggie football team. It also has a prominent role in cattle country as the location for most of the nation's annual JABS (Kansas Beef Fair) event. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hudspeth County were members of Spanish exploratory parties that set out from Mexico City on May 5, 1810. They named their new land Santa Anna del Rio Grande after Santa Anna himself. In 1821, General Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho San Fernando to José Antonio Castro and his brothers-in-law Santiago Lerma and Vicente Guerrero. Castro had married Josefa González de la Garza y Durán and they ranched here until her death in 1849. In Nuevo México Colony lands were claimed by Mexican citizens who had landed there since 1736 during the Acapulco Expedition under Governor Manuel Micheltorena; these men organized themselves into militias to resist English colonization efforts along the Texas coast. Under Mexican rule all Native Americans living within two miles of any Spanish settlement were forced to attend school or face execution. When Mexico gained independence from Spain on July 26, 1821, President James Kossuth issued an order proclaiming that all Native Americans living east of Rock Springs must leave within 72 hours or be deported without any chance for compensation or refuge! This Order caused great outrage among many Texans who saw this as a direct attack on their cultures and way of life! Ruins dating back to this time can still be found near present day Pampa where some settlers built homes while others erected stockades around their ranchos against possible Indian attacks which occurred sporadically throughout much of this period but never with such determination as during this year’s campaign! On September 10th1824 José María Morelos was elected president of New Spain following Hispanic Revolution which overthrew Spanish rule over Iberia including Texas & California; he orderedMexican forces under his command called “Lobos” (Hawks)to attack Texan villages along its border with Chihuahua & Coahuila acts amounting to plunder & arson resulting in dozens dead (& more than 100 wounded) only days after his inauguration! On October 14th1824 Major Francisco Vásquez Galindo arrived at Pampa with troops fresh from Monterrey resulting in open warfare between Mexican forces commanded by Lt Col Pedro Menéndez de Avilés & US Army Lieutenant John Denton leading about 1,500 men @ several points across 500 square milespxpxpxpxpx
