Pampa, Texas is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The town was originally settled by Germans in 1876. It was named for German explorer Wilhelm Pampas. In 1906, it became part of Midland County and had a population of 706. In 1925, Pampa annexed the village of Emmetsburg (now known as Crystal City), and in 1930 it annexes the villages of Haskell and White Sands. That year, its population reached 1,453 residents. When Midland County merged with El Paso County in 1935 to form new El Paso County, Pampa remained within El Paso County until becoming an independent municipality on January 1, 1946. On that date it had a population of 2,011 residents. On July 20th 1954 the first school opened in Pampa when Mrs Jeanne Fetterman donated land to build a school for girls on her farm north of town over which she planned to operate a small general store and serve as the community's only doctor until such time as health services could be provided by out-of-town physicians orretta@comcastmailbox dot com
The first permanent European settlement in what is now Pampa, Texas was a small group of Frenchmen who arrived in 1736. They named their new town after the nearby Chihuahuan Desert. The town slowly grew and by 1846 had a population of 235 people. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1862, but quickly rebuilt and reached its current size by 1872.
